Package Contents: Includes two (2) Tricolor Sweet Potato Vine (Ipomoea batatas) starter plants. Each plant measures approximately 5-9 inches in height. Plants are supplied in a bare-root state for immediate planting.
Distinctive Variegation: Features deeply lobed leaves with a striking three-color pattern of mint green, creamy white, and rose-pink. The variegation is most intense on new growth, adding a soft, pastel texture to garden arrangements.
Vigorous Trailing Habit: Exhibits a mounding and trailing growth structure. Stems cascade gracefully over the edges of containers, making it an ideal "spiller" for hanging baskets, window boxes, and large planters.
Heat and Humidity Resilience: Native to tropical climates, this variety is adapted to high temperatures. It maintains active growth during mid-summer when cool-season annuals often decline.
Versatile Landscape Use: Functions as a trailing container plant or a dense groundcover in garden beds. Thrives as a perennial in USDA Zones 9-11 or as a high-performance annual in Zones 4-8.
Planting Note: Sweet Potato Vines have large, soft leaves that lose moisture quickly during transit. Plants may arrive appearing wilted. Submerging the root system in water immediately upon unpacking rehydrates the plant tissues effectively.
Add a Splash of Pastel Color to Your Garden
The Tricolor Sweet Potato Vine (Ipomoea batatas) offers a sophisticated twist on the classic ornamental vine. While most varieties are solid green or purple, 'Tricolor' features a beautiful blend of mint green, creamy white, and blushing pink. This unique variegation makes it a versatile companion plant, capable of brightening dark corners or softening the look of bold, bright flowers in mixed containers.
The Perfect "Spiller" for Mixed Pots In container gardening, this vine is prized for its ability to trail without being as aggressive as the solid green varieties. It mounds slightly before cascading over the rim of the pot, creating a full, lush look. The pink and white tones in the leaves pair exceptionally well with pink Petunias, white Geraniums, or purple Coleus.
Effective Groundcover Beyond containers, 'Tricolor' serves as an excellent annual groundcover. Its dense foliage shades the soil, helping to retain moisture and suppress weed growth. It roots at the nodes where stems touch the soil, allowing it to spread and carpet an area efficiently.
Hardiness and Care This plant is built for warm weather. It performs best in consistent moisture and heat. The pink coloration is often most vivid in cooler spring temperatures or on fresh new growth.
In Zones 9-11: It grows year-round as a perennial.
In Zones 4-8: It is treated as a spectacular summer annual.
Planting Information These starter plants are shipped bare-root. While the foliage may appear limp upon arrival due to shipping stress, the tuberous root system is resilient. Once planted in warm soil and watered, the plant recovers its turgidity and begins pushing new growth rapidly.
