Package Contents: Includes two (2) Blue Trumpet Vine (Thunbergia grandiflora) starter plants. Each plant measures approximately 5-9 inches in height. Plants are supplied in a bare-root state for immediate planting.
Large Floral Display: Features impressive 3-inch wide, trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pale blue to lavender-mauve with yellow throats. The blooms hang in long, drooping clusters (racemes), creating a curtain of color against the dense, heart-shaped foliage.
Massive Vertical Coverage: Recognized for its vigorous and rapid growth habit. This vine is capable of covering large structures, including pergolas, fences, and second-story balconies, providing an effective vegetative privacy screen.
Pollinator Habitat: The wide, open throats of the trumpet flowers serve as an accessible nectar source for large bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, supporting pollinator activity within the garden.
Climate Adaptability: Thrives as a woody evergreen vine in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11 and is root-hardy in Zone 8. In cooler climates (Zones 4-7), it functions as a fast-growing annual that can establish quickly during the warm season.
Planting Note: Thunbergia grandiflora has large, soft leaves that lose moisture rapidly during transit. Plants may arrive wilted or with leaf drop. This is a physiological response to shipping; the woody stems and roots remain viable and regenerate foliage quickly upon hydration.
Create a Living Wall of Sky Blue
Thunbergia grandiflora, commonly known as the Blue Trumpet Vine, Sky Vine, or Bengal Clock Vine, is one of the most spectacular climbers available for warm-climate gardens. Unlike smaller vines that take years to establish, the Sky Vine is a powerhouse of growth. It is valued for its ability to quickly clothe arbors, fences, and trellises in a lush cloak of green leaves and pendulous blue flowers.
Grand by Name and Nature The species name grandiflora means "large flowers," and this plant delivers. The blooms are significantly larger than other Thunbergia varieties, resembling morning glories but with a thicker, more durable texture. They appear in long, hanging clusters that sway in the breeze, adding movement and elegance to vertical structures.
Privacy and Shade Due to its dense overlapping foliage, the Blue Trumpet Vine is an excellent choice for creating shade over a pergola or screening out unsightly views. The large, heart-shaped leaves form a solid barrier that blocks direct sun and reduces ambient heat on patios.
Growing Requirements This vine loves heat and water. It performs best in rich, organic soil that is kept consistently moist.
In Zones 8-11: It becomes a permanent fixture in the landscape.
In Zones 4-7: It is treated as a warm-season annual. Due to its rapid growth rate, it can still reach impressive heights in a single summer.
Planting Information These starter plants are shipped bare-root. While the plant is robust, the foliage is sensitive to transport. Do not be alarmed if leaves are wilted upon opening the box; the energy is stored in the root system. Plant immediately, water deeply, and provide a strong support structure for the vines to grab.
