Package Contents: Includes two (2) Persian Shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus) starter plants. Each plant measures approximately 5-9 inches in height. Plants are supplied in a bare-root state for immediate potting.
Metallic Iridescence: Features distinctive lance-shaped leaves with a shimmering, metallic purple and silver surface overlaid with green veins. The underside of the foliage is a deep, solid maroon, providing high visual contrast.
Versatile Growing Environment: Thrives as an eye-catching perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11. In cooler climates (Zones 4-8), it functions as a fast-growing summer annual for shade gardens or as a colorful year-round houseplant.
Shade Tolerance: Adapted to thrive in partial shade to full shade outdoors. Direct afternoon sun can bleach the vibrant purple color, making this an ideal choice for brightening dimmer corners of the garden or covered patios.
Heat and Humidity Performance: Native to Myanmar, this species performs well in hot, humid environments. It maintains its lush growth habit during the peak of summer when many cool-season bedding plants fade.
Planting Note: Strobilanthes has thin leaves that lose moisture quickly during transit. Plants may appear wilted upon arrival. This is a temporary condition; rehydration of the roots immediately restores foliage turgidity.
Exotic Metallic Color for Home and Garden
Persian Shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus) is prized by gardeners for its almost artificial-looking foliage. Unlike typical green plants, the leaves of the Persian Shield display a neon-purple iridescence with a metallic sheen that catches the light. This unique coloration makes it a standout "thriller" plant in mixed containers or a dramatic bedding plant that breaks up the monotony of green landscapes.
A Jewel for the Shade Finding vibrant color for shaded areas can be difficult, as most blooming plants require sun. Persian Shield solves this problem by providing intense color through its foliage rather than flowers. It flourishes in dappled light or morning sun, making it perfect for planting under tree canopies or on shaded porches.
Indoor and Outdoor Adaptability
As a Houseplant: Its preference for indirect light and humidity makes it an excellent indoor specimen. It adds a tropical, royal aesthetic to bright bathrooms or living rooms.
As an Annual: In most of the US (Zones 4-8), it grows rapidly during the warm season, reaching heights of 18-36 inches, before acting as a natural indicator of frost.
Growth Habit and Care This soft-stemmed shrub grows in an upright, bushy mound. To maintain a compact shape and encourage branching, the tips of the stems can be pinched back occasionally. It prefers consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out completely.
Planting Information These starter plants are shipped bare-root. While the foliage is dramatic, it is also soft and may wilt during shipping. This is a normal physiological response. The root systems are resilient and will support rapid recovery and new growth once planted and watered.
