Unboxing Your Live Plant: First 24 Hours Checklist

Your new plant just arrived, and what you do in the first 24 hours makes a real difference in how quickly it recovers from shipping and settles into its new home. Here's your checklist.

 

Unbox Right Away

 

Open the box as soon as possible after delivery, even if you're not ready to fully care for the plant yet. Leaving a plant boxed up in the dark for an extended period adds unnecessary stress on top of shipping.

 

Inspect the Plant and Soil

 

Check the overall condition of the plant, noting any leaf drop, drooping, or minor damage to stems. This is normal after shipping in many cases, so don't panic over small cosmetic issues. Check that the soil is still in the container and hasn't spilled during transit.

 

Remove Packaging Material

 

Carefully remove any wrapping, ties, or padding used to protect the plant during shipping. Be gentle around stems and branches, since they may still be more brittle than usual after being boxed.

 

Check Soil Moisture

 

Feel the soil to determine if it needs water. Plants can dry out during transit, so many will need a drink shortly after arrival, but avoid overwatering an already-moist root ball.

 

Find the Right Spot

 

Place your new plant in a location matching its light requirements, but avoid moving it directly into intense, direct sun right away if it's been in a dark box for several days. A brief adjustment period in bright, indirect light helps prevent additional stress.

 

Hold Off on Fertilizing

 

Avoid fertilizing immediately after unboxing. Let the plant settle in for a couple of weeks before starting a regular feeding schedule, since stressed roots don't need the added demand.

 

Be Patient with Recovery

 

Some leaf drop, drooping, or minor yellowing in the days after arrival is normal and usually resolves within one to two weeks as the plant adjusts. Consistent, appropriate care during this window matters more than any single day.
